When Will JAMB and Schools Give Admissions For 2020/2021? See Answers

When will JAMB and schools give admission for 2020/2021?

A few students had asked me when admissions would be given this year. Students and parents are generally worried about how JAMB and institutions will offer admissions for the 2020/2021 academic year. The reason for this is not farfetched.

We all know one of the aftermaths of CODVI-19 is confusion in the academic schedules of institutions nationwide. Some universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education were in their first semesters when the lockdown was announced. Some were just at the beginnings of the second semesters at that time all schools and admission activities were suspended.

Time of Offering Admission May Not Significantly Change

We can, with common sense, conclude that the time of offering admissions should be different from the previous years. After all, many things had been affected and economically paralyzed, school activities should be slow. Hence, making the time of admission extended by months.

Won't you be surprised if that is not the case? Won't you wonder if our institutions' dates of activities are still met notwithstanding?

For the reference, JAMB usually draws an admission calendar for institutions to follow and meet up with the deadlines in admitting new intakes. When we didn't have pandemics, most institutions still struggled to meet up while some even released all their lists before the deadlines.

Obviously, calendars had been disorganized. But, when will school admit for the year or we should just forget there will be admissions at all for his year?

Any Possible References to Admissions in Scenarios Like This
To date, JAMB, like institutions, had not witnessed an era like this coronavirus attack. Hence, it may be difficult to say upfront what these bodies are likely to do in order to offer admissions with the look of things.

However, we should have a few references to how things are likely to be handled after the lockdown is over and schools resume. Even though we can't say yet when schools will be asked to open. Some rumors had been debunked by the Federal government. Yet, we're sure this will be over one day, most likely any time sooner especially with the executives working on the modalities to reopen schools.

As for what to expect after the lockdown is over, which could give us clues to when admissions will be offered, below are the likely COVID-19 aftermaths vis a vis admissions offer by JAMB and schools.

1. JAMB May Likely Hasten After-UTME Activities
It'll be no surprise if JAMB rushes all admission activities following the lifting of national lockdown. The board has twice, in the past, rushed the sales of JAMB forms without extensions. It shouldn't be a surprise if we witness the same this time in order for the board to meet admission activities scheduled for the year.

Among the activities to be on the lookout for is the printing of JAMB notification of results, the announcement of national cut off marks, the change of institutions and courses, etc. Especially for the change of institutions and courses, candidates should be at alert as various institutions are likely to rush the sales of their post UTME forms.

That takes us to the next point.

2. Institutions Will Be Forced to Hasten Post UTMEs/Screenings
Whether JAMB rushes activities or not, most universities will be left with no other choice than to rush their after-UTME activities. Of course, by this time of the year, schools like Kwara State University and Tai Solarin University of Education should have ended the sales of their first batch admission screening forms. These universities are now stopped due to the lockdown in town.

And with several private universities already selling their forms e.g BOWEN, BACKCOCK, etc, competitions will be tense among public institutions as soon as COVID-19 lockdown is over.

Similar to this is the duration of sales of the form. Schools may have to shorten the number of weeks usually used to sell their forms. Where a school usually sells for 6 weeks, you should expect 3 weeks this time.

3. Some Institutions May Be Forced to Screen Instead
There are two possible forms your institution's post UTME may take. Some schools will adopt exams while others will choose the screening. But for the 2020/2021 admission year, most universities, polytechnics, and colleges will give in to screenings even if they're known for exams.

Of course, it takes schools time to conduct the online registrations, schedule for CBT test, conduct and supervise the exams. Due to time factors, some stubborn schools adopting the test method before may bend to screening only this time. This will save time and other resources.

4. There Won't Be Free or Mass Admissions
Some candidates are already speculating that universities won't have other choices than to give applicants mass admissions. There's nothing like that. Stop daydreaming!

That could be possible for primary and secondary schools. But, for our higher institutions of learning, there won't be mass admissions.

In fact, some candidates are already rejoicing when they heard JAMB was already offering admissions for the year 2020.

What is possible is for most institutions to leave their admissions to JAMB only. In other words, such schools won't do any online registrations, conduct entrance test, or screening. Instead, they will allow JAMB to decide candidates that merit their offers based on the scores in UTME.

Of course, that's not new as schools such as Federal College of Agric Moor Plantation Ibadan and a few others were used to this method to date.

5. JAMB CAPS Activities Will Be Fastened
A very important part of yearly admission activities is the JAMB CAPS. This is the medium through which institutions offer admissions now. It's on the same platform JAMB is monitoring how institutions are distributing spaces.

Starting from being 'recommended for admission' to the stage, 'admitted', it takes more time than necessary before now. As for this year, candidates should be quick to follow their admission progress on CAPS as what was used to be delayed may not suffer the same fate this year.

Unfortunately, no admission for candidates not offered through the JAMB CAPS.

6. Closer Resumption Date For the Newly Admitted Candidates
With the pace of admission activities from JAMB and various institutions, the resumption dates for the newly admitted students will be quicker than usual.

It's possible to rely on the last speed of activities after schools had released lists. This time, things will be different. You may need to get your pieces of stuff ready as soon as you're offered a space in a school because lectures may start before you even know it.

No one will doubt it that things will be different with admission activities this year. Even though schools are not open, various institutions are opened for decision-makers to strategize things ahead of the lift. You won't be surprised if many schools don't miss out a day in their calendars as they'd already finetuned things in advance.
